How to plan for your first ride to Himalayas

Stuck in Bangalore's city life for a long duration due to shit-storm covid threw at us, we planned to go to mountains as we have been to majority of beaches in Goa, Tamilnadu and Kerala.

This was the time to challenge ourselves to see something amazing, do an epic ride and create a story to inspire others and most importantly create memories for a lifetime experience.

Inspiration

Last time I was in Uttarakhand in year 2017, I saw the view above and wondered what would it be like to ride and get closer to these mountains. That thought stayed with me for a very long time and couldn't get it out of my head. And this is where I went.

I started planning bit by bit in my head and used to love it. I was thinking of which bike, which route, which place can give me a sense of life in mountains, which treks/hike to take etc etc.

So finally lockdowns and travel restrictions were lifted and I was so so ready to go. Before I go ahead with planning, I wanted to share a funny story about the plan, all this while I was planning for a solo bike ride and when I shared this with my wife, she immediately told me she is coming along no matter what, you know what happens after that.

now we are two on a bike, I did not want to take too much of risk and asked my wife should we take a cab instead of bike? she refused to take a cab on curvy mountain roads as she feels nauseated due to mountains sickness.

The Plan

  1. Where exactly? we wanted to travel in December so wanted to avoid most touristy place like Manali, Kasol etc. and decided to go to Uttarakhand.
  2. Bike? it's Himalayas isn't it? so let be a bike which is very Himalayan, Yes we chose Himalayan for two reason a) being best for terrain we would be riding b) Carrier to carry our luggage.
  3. how many days? 5 days of Bike riding + 4 days of extra.
  4. Winter Clothing Jackets(-10 degree), woolen socks, couple of base layers, good quality of gloves, Beanie caps, Neck warmers. Ya thats it :)
  5. Apart from all of the above we had two thick jeans, a tyre inflater and a first aid kit.
